Called "the best player of the Fort Lewis junior college era" by former coach Ned Wallace, Gene Carpenter made a lasting impression during his one year of athletics at Fort Lewis A&M by lettering in both football and basketball.

On the hardwood, Carpenter earned all-conference honors in guiding the Aggies to a divisional championship and runner-up finishes in both their conference and region during the 1952-53 season. On the gridiron, he earned the respect of his opponents and was named to Eastern Arizona's all-opponent team.

Carpenter also lettered in basketball in 1949 at Lamar Junior College in Beaumont, Texas, and in 1954 at Lamar Tech, also in Beaumont. He earned second team all-conference honors both of those seasons.

Carpenter served his fellow citizens of Beaumont as a police officer from 1954 to 1967, attaining the rank of sergeant. He established the University Police Department at Lamar University in Beaumont in 1967, and was employed at the college until his retirement in 1993.

He was a member of the Texas Police Association, the National Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators, the Texas and New Mexico Association of College and University Police Departments, and the Southeast Texas Law Enforcement Council.
