A key leader in guiding the Fort Lewis women's cross country team to national prominence in the mid 1990s, Hilary Flaming ran for the Skyhawk harriers from 1995-99.

An All-American and two-time Academic All-American, Flaming led the cross country women's program to a 1998 NCAA National Championship appearance.  An All-Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference and all-region runner, Flaming became an All-American after finishing 24th averall in the 1995 NCAA Division II Championships in Spartanburg, S.C.  A graduate of Shawnee Mission West high School in Overland Park, Kansas, Flaming was selected to the 1996 and 1997 Academic All-RMAC teams and was voted the most valuable player in 1995 and 1996.  She also was co-recipient of the school's Outstanding Senior Female Athlete Award for the 1999-2000 season.

"Hilary set the highest standard for excellence, both in the classroom and on the cross country course,"  said FLC Assistant Director of Athletics for External Operations and Communications Chris Aaland, who served as sports information director throughout Flaming's career.  "She qualified for nationals as a true freshman in 1995 to begin her career, and then led her team to an NCAA National Championship appearance as a senior in 1999. This is especially difficult considering the nation's two top programs — Adams State and Western State — nearly always take the top two spots for our region. Competition is always fierce for the remaining NCAA bids. Equally as important as her athletic career is Hilary's remarkable academic record. The Skyhawk cross country teams consistently earn Academic All-American team designations, and Hilary was one of the team leaders who helped us establish this tradition."
