During his three years of basketball at Fort Lewis College from 1966 through 1969, Leroy Walker established himself as one of the school's greatest scorers. He still ranks on Fort Lewis College's all-time scoring charts.

Mr. Walker came to the Raiders from Odessa Junior College in Texas, where he was a started as a freshman. During his first season at Fort Lewis College, he averaged 20 points per game and set school records with 35 points and 17 field goals against Western New Mexico (both records have since been broken).

His junior season never materialized, though, as an illness kept him out of the lineup most of the year and dropped 55 lbs. from his frame. During the summer, Mr. Walker went through a rigorous off-season conditioning and weight-training program to recapture a starting position.

Mr. Walker's senior season mirrored his sophomore campaign - - 20 points per game and a new Fort Lewis College single-season record of 480 points (also since broken). He earned honorable mention all-conference honors that year.
He graduated from Fort Lewis College in 1969 with a bachelor's degree in history, and later earned a master's degree from Ball State University in U.S. history and government.

Mr. Walker has been involved in secondary education since leaving Fort Lewis College. After one year at Pyle Middle School in Albuquerque, N.M., he moved to Knightstown, Ind., where he taught at Morton Memorial High School at the Indiana Soldiers' and Sailors' Children's Home.

He was active in coaching from 1970 through 1988, serving as high school wrestling coach for 15 years, junior high track & field coach for 18 years, and junior high cross country coach for 16 years. His teams won 17 conference titles in track & field and another in cross-country.
