After four years as a starter on the Fort Lewis College football team from 1973-76, Darryl Washington hadn't had enough. He tried out for the basketball team the following season and earned a fifth varsity letter.

During his gridiron days, MWashington saw most of his action as a tight end, although he also played defensive end and running back. He earned first team All-Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference honors as a tight end in 1975 and received all-conference honorable mention as a running back in 1976.

In his one year of basketball, he finished fifth in the RMAC in rebounding with 8.8 caroms per game and received all-district honorable mention

He graduated from Fort Lewis College in 1978 with a bachelor's degree in physical education.

Washington parlayed his successful Raider career into a brief stint with the Philadelphia Eagles. He made the most of an invitation to Philadelphia's 1978 training camp, and remained on the Eagle roster throughout pre-season. At the time, NFL rules allowed each team to keep just 45 players on their roster, and Washington was the last player to be cut before the regular season.

After being released from the Eagles, he became the recreation coordinator for the city of Farmington, N.M. One year later, in 1979, he became the assistant executive director for the Farmington Boys' Club. In 1983, he became a detox counselor in Farmington.

In the mid 1980s, Washington moved to Ogden, Utah, where he worked at a trade center for low income and at-risk children. He worked as a machinist for Kimberly Clark Corporation in Ogden.

Washington was active in his community, and received the 1994 Volunteer of the Year award from the Ogden Community Action head start center.
