When Don Schutz scored 38 points against Western New Mexico on Feb. 15, 1969, he set a school record for single-game scoring that would stand for more than 20 years.

But the four-year letter winner was much more than a scorer during his career. Perhaps best known for his rebounding, Mr. Schutz, at the time of induction, ranked fifth in Fort Lewis College history with 603 career caroms by the end of his career.

By averaging 15.8 points and 10.2 rebounds per game, Mr. Schutz accomplished something during his senior season that's happened few times in Fort Lewis College history: averaging double figures in both scoring and rebounding. His 10.2 rebounds per game were third best in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference that season, while his .535 shooting from the field was second best in the RMAC. During the 1969 season, he was named one of the Outstanding College Athletes of America.

Mr. Schutz earned four varsity basketball letters at Fort Lewis College from 1965 to 1969. He graduated from Fort Lewis College in 1970 wish a bachelor's degree in history.

From 1969 to 1973, Mr. Schutz taught and coached basketball at the Bloomfield Schools in Bloomfield, N.M. In 1973, he moved to Wagon Mound, N.M., where he was a cattle rancher.
