Former standout basketball player Steve Schutz received unanimous votes into the Fort Lewis College Athletic Hall of Fame. At the time of his induction, Schutz held the school record in scoring (1,569 points) and field goals made (626). He ranked second in blocks (195) and free throws made (317) and fifth in rebounds (743).

Schutz was named to the All-North Central District Team in 1997 and to the Successful Farming Magazine All-America Farm Team twice. As a junior, he was named to the All-RMAC Second Team. Following his senior season, Schutz earned All-RMAC West Division First Team honors, the Fort Lewis College Outstanding Male Award, and the team's Most Valuable Player.

Schutz' career spanned from 1993-97 at Fort Lewis College and continued professionally overseas. He played for the Cossonay Basket Club in 1997-98 where he averaged 28.8 points and 9.1 rebounds per game and was nominated to the Switzerland All-Star game.

The following season, Schutz played for the La Chauz de Fonds Basket Club where he averaged the most points in Switzerland's history, 41.2 points. He scored a season high 56 points three times.
